Amethyst is the purple and most highly prized variety of
the quartz family. The color used in jewelry ranges from the pale lilac "rose de
France" to a dark, intense royal purple, sometimes with a reddish highlight. The
latter is characteristic of top "Siberian" quality, first found in Russia, and
subsequently in Brazil and Zambia.
